This was our free week during our time in New Zealand, and it honestly felt like a trip within a trip. My dad and I rented a car and drove down to Tauranga. It was such a cool little city. Super laid back, full of locals, and way less hectic than Auckland. There were a bunch of great shops and restaurants, and it just had that classic beach town feel where everyone seems relaxed and in no rush to be anywhere.
Over the next few days we drove all over the North Island countryside. A lot of winding roads, green hills, and random pull offs with views that look like postcards. We spent most of our days surfing in Tauranga and over in Raglan. Raglan especially was awesome. It has such a strong surf culture and a really cool vibe. The waves were solid, and it was just fun being out there with my dad, trading waves and laughing about the wipeouts.
One of the highlights was taking a sightseeing flight over the coast. Seeing the beaches, cliffs, and farmland from above gave a totally different perspective. The water looked unreal from the air, and it made you realize how much coastline there really is. It was one of those moments where you just sit there and think about how lucky you are to be there.
On our last day, we went for a hike at Karangahake Gorge. The trails run through old mining tunnels and along the river, with suspension bridges and crazy blue water below. It was the perfect way to wrap up the week. A little adventure, a lot of good views, and just a great way to spend time together.
Overall, it was an unreal week. A lot of driving, a lot of surfing, and a lot of quality time with my dad. Definitely a part of the trip I will not forget.
