Day 15 (1/21/2026)

This morning we took a train ride to the Melbourne Library of Sustainable Materials. I found it really interesting how they are able to create so many useful building materials out of things we would normally consider trash. They had examples like cement made from mining byproducts and tiles made from eggshells, along with a lot of other recycled and low-impact materials. It really changed the way I think about waste and construction. Instead of seeing materials as disposable, the whole place emphasized how much potential there is to reuse what already exists. It was cool to see how sustainability is not just a concept, but something that is actively being applied to real construction products.

Later that afternoon, we did a jobsite visit in Melbourne, and it was honestly one of my favorite things we have seen on the trip so far. The site was on a very small piece of land and completely surrounded by other occupied buildings, which immediately showed how challenging the project must be. They had demolished an existing historical building but kept the original brick facade so it could be incorporated into the new structure. Seeing that in person was fascinating. The bracing systems they used to support the facade were impressive, and it really showed how much planning and engineering goes into protecting historical elements while still moving forward with new construction. Being able to walk the site and hear about the methods they were using made everything we have been learning feel a lot more real.

That day was awesome! The materials library was so interesting especially the eggshell tiles and the cement mix. And that jobsite was next‑level. The whole façade setup didn’t was a structural puzzle.
