Today, our class had the opportunity to visit a university construction project in Melbourne that is currently being delivered by BLD ENG. The site visit was a great experience and gave us a real-world look at how a large, active jobsite operates in an urban environment.
One of the highlights of the visit was meeting the BLD ENG team. They were incredibly welcoming, knowledgeable, and down to earth, which made it easy to ask questions and learn more about the project. They walked us through the overall scope of the development, explained the construction methods being used, and pointed out some of the challenges of coordinating a complex build in the city. It was especially interesting to hear about how they manage safety, logistics, and scheduling on a tight site with so many moving parts.
Being able to see the project firsthand helped connect what we’ve been learning in class to what actually happens in the field. Observing the sequencing of work, the equipment in use, and the way different trades were interacting gave me a much better understanding of how these projects come together beyond drawings and textbooks.
After the site visit, we had the afternoon off to work on our thesis.
